Food for Thought. Locusts vs Beef.

What on earth do you think this is? What on earth do you think this is made of??  The answer is.....  Locusts!  Do Japanese people eat not only raw fish, but also locusts? The answer is..... Yes!  The packages above and below are how cooked locusts are sold in the supermarket here in Japan. It's loaded with calcium as well as it's very delicious. Now you may as well think of the Japanese as barbarians, but my question is that where can you draw the line to set bizarre foods apart from normal foods?? I think the line is closely bound up with in which culture you are born and brought up. In some parts of the world, people eat dogs, which makes us feel disgusted, while we have no question as to eating beef, which makes Hindus appalled !! So, you can say your perception that judges what is OK as an ingredient to eat and what is not OK is pretty much dependent on the fact that which culture has molded your "taste buds".

Come and eat the locusts dish here in Japan! It's so good!

Thank you so much for dropping by.
Actually,Japan had a long vegetable-centered diet tradition till she became westerninzed. I've always longed for becoming semi-vegan,though so far not successful at all.

P.S. Hee sounds like a Japanese word!

  3. Great post Yoshi! I'm a vegetarian so don't eat any of it. I think vegan would be much harder but I say that just because I like butter and milk. :<) It's so important for people to realize that there are lots of different diets all over the world. I remember reading once that when Japanese people moved to America and started eating beef, they got a lot of the American illnesses. I'd love you to post some of the vegetable dishes!

  4. Okay -- not really on my list of things I'm eager to eat, but I like octopus and squid, so why not bugs?

I'm happy to find that you like this post! And it's very funny and humorous of you to admit you like butter and milk inspite of being a vegetarian. Maybe I shouldn't talk about the concept of being a vegetarian, but let me guess. I think its rudiment idea lie in their longing for peace and harmoney to be humbled by the fact that we are part of Mother nature as well with the rest of us on the planet. I believe in the importance of accepting food diversity as you mentioned because it would bring peace to the world. Now I'm motivated to post some vegetable dishes!

P.S. "Nan" sounds like the Indian diet!

    Thank you for your comment!
It's smart of you to rationalize eating bugs from your preference for octopus and squid!

Your surprised me! After all, you're the first American who said liked octopus!! Every American I've ever met showed "Ewww" for eating octopus.LOL I really think that your reaction to something can be defined by cultural components.

P.S. I guess you like sea food because you are Beth Fish....=P

  7. Great post. Yes, food likings are often defined by culture. Ihave tried octopus and squid and have enjoyed both, though it does depend on the cook. Some are badly cooked and not worth eating, but that can be said for some beef dishes I've had.

I supposed I would try locust in the right setting, ie: everyone else is eating them.

]Last week I tried a vegan raw food dinner. very good.

Thank you so much for your comment.

In reality, many western people around me say like Octopus are too ugly to be food.LOL So,now I'm just curious. Beth likes octopus,Heather likes octopus.Does this mean someone who likes reading is good at making friends with residents in the sea?? Am I overgeneralizeing it just from two subjects??LOL

Actually,in Japan quite a few people don't cook octopus. We just eat it raw, dipping it into say sauce. We do eat raw fish, raw horse meat, raw eggs.... Cultures mold people, people mold the culture..... Which molded which at the very begining? In my head, this argument eventually boils down to "God" all the time.LOL
